How do you track your expenses? Via spreadsheet? Your good old notebook? Or an app? What’s a must-have budgeting app you swear by?
We asked our folks at SVIC Facebook Group and here’s what they say:
Mint
“I’ve been using Mint since 2009. It’s free and super easy to use. It can help you track your spending, set budget goals, and provide you with a dashboard to track all of your financial accounts and assets (Stocks, real estate, personal belongings, misc. assets).” —SVIC Member
“It’s not great for expats with overseas transactions etc. Not bad considering, but still.” —SVIC Member
YNAB (You Need A Budget)
“I love it! Wish the UI design was slightly more modern but otherwise it’s great. It assigns every dollar a job so you know where all your money is going even to different savings categories. You can customize your spending and saving categories in ways that are meaningful for you. For example I have a separate spending category for vacations and weekend trips because I really want to understand where I spend the most on travel. My partner and I have used it for the last 3 years. It does cost $80 a year but it’s totally worth it. In fact it helped me find fraudulent spending on one of my cards.” —Aisling Scott
PocketSmith
“Ooh, I saw a quote from an Aussie saying it’s great for expats! Might give this a go.” —SVIC Member

Excel Spreadsheet
“Excel doc I made that allows me to categorize myself and set budgets. Here’s an example of what I use: Budgeting-Template.xlsx. Yeah, you do have to manually input your expenses, but the fact that you can better manually categorize them, I find to be more helpful than some of the apps that try to automatically do that.” —SVIC Member
